Performed with Sam Annand as part of the exhibition Mushrooms: The Art, Design & Future of Fungi at Somerset House, London, March 2020. Costume design by Matty Bovan.
Combining voice, theremin, modular synth and scent, Stink Music conjures a dank, mushroom-rich environment that moves between sound and smell, fertility and decay. The performance includes a series of scents released into the auditorium in time with three movements: Earth, Slime and Air. Ingredients include:
— Bacdanol (‘sandalwood, greasy, sweet, mossy’)
— Dimethyl sulphide (‘cabbage, sulphurous, onion, creamy’)
— Earthy pyrazine (‘raw potato, freshly dug soil, musty’)
— Indole (‘lily stamens, mothballs’)
— Ozofleur (‘ozone, fresh air, marine’)
— Shangrilide oliffac (‘musky, animalic, leathery, faecal’)
— Verdoracine (‘carrot root, dry, balsamic’)
— Violet leaf absolute (‘earthy, waxy, green-leaf, floral-violet')
