The Jump Room
2017
Performance with Richard Whitby & Sooyon Kim

Image: South Kiosk, London

A series of songs with lyrics borrowed from Whitby's script for The Jump Room, a sci-fi film that takes its name from a conspiracy theory alleging the existence of teleportation devices between Earth and Mars disguised as an ordinary elevators.

This narrative is played out in contrast with a familiar one of customer service labour, typically carried out by young, low-paid workers who are asked to put their affective labour towards selling connoisseur products like ‘barista-crafted’ coffee. The performance ask whether one can be considered more of a ‘conspiracy’; more ‘fake’ than the other.

First performed at South Kiosk, London; then at The Old Waterworks, Southend.

As part of Richard Whitby’s larger project The Jump Room.
